Finally Sucking My Teeth: The Struggle is REAL!

I've seen the pictures below posted all over social media lately, and I am furious!

The reality is that these pictures do not represent the truth! There are very few people receiving Food Stamps or other forms of public assistance that really live with their refrigerators over flowing. The reality is that most people are STILL struggling even with food stamps! Working in Human Services, I get to see first hand, that the the struggle is real! So many people have allowed the media and their one shady cousin or homegirl to convince them that the life on public assistance is the easy life....LIES!! People who need assistance are usually degraded, disrespected, and treated less than human just because they want to feed their families, and are unfortunately unable to do that on their own! I know quite a few people who receive food stamps, and it is no where near enough to feed their families! Oh, and no these people aren't irresponsible, promiscuous, bad decision making, lazy women with no goals (contrary to the skewed picture of public assistance recipients)! Instead they are hard-working, tax paying women who still struggle with making ends meet.

One woman in particular is a Desert Storm Veteran, who was exposed to chemical agents that caused her to have uterine bleeding, hair loss, and various psychological issues, not to mention PTSD! Because of this she was discharged from the military, but denied VA benefits, and unable to work. She applied for Food Stamps to feed her family of three and was on given $74 per month! That's right, three people can eat well with an overflowing refrigerator for only $74 per MONTH! Well, that's what the people who created the meme above would like you to think!

This idea that if you make the "right" decisions and do the "right" things then life will be OK, is a total farce! That's not the case! There are tons of people in this wonderful country that can barely take care of themselves or their families, that have college degrees, work everyday, and have tried to make the so-called "right choices". Poverty and lack don't care about your choices, they only care about stealing your joy and keeping you bound and begging, while those with LITTLE more than you think that they have arrived and are so far from being where you are, because after all, you're that way because YOU DESERVE IT! If you would have kept your legs closed, worked harder in school, graduated, gotten a better job, and made better career/ relationship choices, you would be living the "good" life. SHAMEFUL! The truth of the matter is that NO ONE deserves to live in poverty, hunger, or lack! NO ONE deserves to struggle everyday just to survive, regardless of what choices they made! NO ONE deserves to be humiliated and shamed when they go to DSS to get assistance, yet most people are! I didn't grow up receiving public assistance, but through working in Human Services for several years, and struggling to make ends meet as a single adult, I definitely have A LOT of compassion for people who need it!

As a believer, it's important to remember the poor. The Bible tells us that they that give to the poor lend to the Lord. One of the proofs that Jesus was/ is the Messiah was that the poor had the gospel preached to them! It was just as important as blind eyes being opened, and lepers being cleansed!! So in all of our pursuits of God and the things of God, let's be sure not to forget His heart for the poor. God loves everyone, and He has a special love for the poor, let's be the same way.

Below are a few scriptures that relate to the poor/ needy and how they should be treated.

Deuteronomy 15:7- 8
7“If there is a poor man with you, one of your brothers, in any of your towns in your land which the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart, nor close your hand from your poor brother; 8but you shall freely open your hand to him, and shall generously lend him sufficient for his need in whatever he lacks.

Proverbs 19:17
One who is gracious to a poor man lends to the LORD, And He will repay him for his good deed.

Leviticus 25:35
"'If any of your fellow Israelites become poor and are unable to support themselves among you, help them as you would a foreigner and stranger, so they can continue to live among you.

1 John 3:17
If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person?

Isaiah 61:1
The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners,

Luke 4:18
"The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free,

Luke 7:18- 22
18The disciples of John reported to him about all these things. 19Summoning two of his disciples, John sent them to the Lord, saying, “Are You the Expected One, or do we look for someone else?” 20When the men came to Him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to You, to ask, ‘Are You the Expected One, or do we look for someone else?’” 21At that very time He cured many people of diseases and afflictions and evil spirits; and He gave sight to many who wereblind. 22And He answered and said to them, “Go and report to John what you have seen and heard: the BLIND RECEIVE SIGHTthe lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the POOR HAVE THE GOSPEL PREACHED TO THEM.

It's in my DNA...

I started writing this post in February, and never published it. Enjoy!

This morning I spent some time watching preachers on television and on YouTube: Joyce Meyers, Joseph Prince, and Trip Lee. Watching these three people minister the Word was so inspiring. Not only were the messages edifying, but just seeing them preach and teach the word of God  according to the grace given to them stirred up the gift of God in me! The anointing on their lives/ messages gave me a greater desire to study, meditate on scripture, and prepare myself/ allow the Holy Spirit to inwardly prepare me to preach the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ!!! I am still hyped, even as I type this!!

As I thought about what was taking place in me, I realized that although I tend to shrink back from what God wants me to do, because of my perceived inadequacies and a fear of failing, in the depths of my heart I genuinely desire to share the Gospel/ good news of Christ Jesus with the lost. In fact, while I was watching the sermons the following thought popped into my mind, "It's in my DNA"!!  Wow, the realization that the Father has placed my purpose in my DNA is such a WONDERFUL thing!!! Regardless of how much I may try to avoid it, or convince God to choose someone else, I really have no other choice but to do His will and preach His word...because He created me to do it! If I am uniquely designed to preach, who am I not to do what I was created to do?

Just like it would be strange if a bird tried to be a cat, it would be strange if I tried to become anything other than what God created me to be. I could go off and pursue my dream of being a Master Pop-Locker, convincing myself that it was what I was supposed to do, because I do LOVE a mean pop and lock and I think I'm pretty good at it ;-), but what good would that do me? Although being a world class Pop-Locker would be extremely entertaining and enjoyable, I would never find genuine fulfillment in it. Why? Because I was created to preach, not Pop-Lock! HAHAHA!! **I am seriously rolling!!**

No, but really I think there are many things we may be talented to do and even enjoy, but that is different than being divinely programmed  by God for a specific purpose! Often people classify their jobs, gifts, talents, and aspirations as their purpose, but your purpose is bigger than a job...your purpose is what God has designed you to do!

I will give thanks to you because I have been so amazingly and miraculously made. Your works are miraculous, and my soul is fully aware of this. (Psalm 139:14)

I Don't Get It...

Earthquakes, Hurricanes, Flooding..Oh My! It's interesting that when things like this happen people tend to say things like, "The world is ending" "God ain't playin'" or "You betta get right" but no one seems to actually change his or her life accordingly. I mean the very same people with such "reverence" for God during natural disasters are the same ones living reckless the day after. The fear of God that comes and goes is not really fear at all.

Just my thoughts...

Expiration Date...

I had a conversation a few weeks ago that really got me thinking, "How would my life be different if I knew my "expiration date"? Yes, in Jesus Christ I have eternal life, but this body is not a "non-perishable" and will one day "expire". Being a twenty-something, I don't usually think of death as something that can happen soon, but how if it did? Would I be pleased with what I accomplished with my life? Would there be anything left in me to give?

Now, I am a single woman who happens to be lactose intolerant, but I still enjoy milk in my cereal, oatmeal, and it is a needed ingredient in my peach cobbler :-D (This may seem like random and unnecessary information, but just follow for a bit). Anyway, I have been buying small cartons of milk with the intention that I will use it all before the expiration date, but more times than not the end result is me wasting milk and money, because I rarely am able to finish even a small carton in the time allotted before the expiration date. As the expiration date approaches, I start eating bowls of cereal for breakfast and dinner, and trying to find the time to bake or do SOMETHING that requires milk, so that it is ALL USED UP by the expiration date.

As of today, I want to begin to live my life this way: I want everything to be ALL USED UP by my expiration date, whenever that may be. Honestly, I don't think I have even opened the "carton" of my life yet! There is SOOOO much that I need and want to do before this body expires!

Some of the things I want to do on the earth before this body expires are:
  • I want to BOLDLY preach the gospel of Jesus Christ around the world.
  • I want to raise someone from the dead, well I want GOD to raise someone from the dead through me
  • I want to heal the sick in Jesus' name
  • I want to open a soup kitchen in Baltimore
  • I want to be a philanthropist and give money to the poor
John 9:4 - We must quickly carry out the tasks assigned us by the one who sent us. The night is coming, and then no one can work. (NLT)

Ecclesiastes 9:10 - Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the grave, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom. (NIV)

I love LOVE...

Yesterday I attended one of the most beautiful weddings I have been to in a while. What made the wedding so beautiful weren't the decorations, venue, or the fact that the bride and groom were both gorgeous, but it was the genuine love that they both share. Their love is truly inspiring and it is a testament of what God will do for those that love and WAIT on Him!

This post is dedicated to my friends Mr. & Mrs. Donald and Keyanna Peart!!
 I love you guys!

Because He first loved me...

I have really been thinking on how AWESOME God's love really is. The fact that God loves us so much that He sent His son, Jesus Christ, to die for our sins is absolutely amazing! The vastness of God's love is immeasurable and incomparable to anything else that we have or could ever experience. His love is pure, perfect, and it is unconditional. The best part about His love is that it is free of charge! There is nothing we have to do to earn it, He gives it to us FREELY, all we have to do is receive! <<<<<<< Now that is GOOD NEWS!

1 John 4:10 (KJV) - Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

1 John 4:19 (KJV) - We love him, because he first loved us.

God Bless You! :-)

Allow me to introduce myself...

Hello All (the 2 people who will probably see this, LOL)! I'm Tia and this is my blog....Welcome.

This is not my first time blogging, but hopefully this will be my first time being a consistent blogger with actual content. To date, I have 2 other blogs that I can't remember the names of, nor can I remember how to access them, yeah I know that's pretty whack. Let's just hope that the third time is a winner!

My intention with this blog is to share some of the things I have been studying (Bible Study), my take on current events, and to share some of the random thoughts and sometimes foolish occurrences from my life and the lives of some of my closest homegirls (you will read a lot about my "Homettes" as the days and months go by).

I am in my late 20's, I live in Maryland, I am a daughter, big sister, friend, a child/ servant/ lover of God, and I am an ordained minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ (I can't believe I actually typed that, but it's true). I love to laugh, dance (liturgical dance and I do a mean two-step at wedding receptions & birthday parties, LOL!!), and encourage/ help others. I also love to accessorize...if it's BIG, Colorful, and Gaudy I'll probably LOVE IT! Yup, that's me in a nutshell!

I will try to update this blog AT LEAST once a week, so please check back soon!
